STMicroelectronics is committed to providing automakers with the technology they need, including driver monitoring systems (DMS) that measure driver concentration to ensure safer driving on the road. The next-generation hybrid dual-shutter image sensor just announced by STMicroelectronics can monitor the entire vehicle interior, covering the driver and all passenger spaces in all directions. New target applications for the new image sensor include passenger seat belt detection, vital signs monitoring, child forgetting detection, gesture recognition, and high-quality video recording.

Eric Aussedat, Executive Vice President and General Manager of the Imaging Sub-Business Unit at STMicroelectronics, said: "The DMS market is growing at a double-digit rate, and ST's new image sensor will enable comprehensive surveillance systems covering multiple occupants in the vehicle. Promote the development of the DMS market, empower car manufacturers to develop new services, provide greater value to car users, and further promote technological development and application innovation with our market-leading DMS sensors."

The new sensor VD/VB1940 is a cost-effective solution for cabin monitoring systems that monolithically integrates the sensitivity and high resolution of an infrared sensor with the high dynamic range (HDR) of a color image sensor, which can operate in both rolling shutter and global shutter modes Alternate shooting below, with 5.1 megapixels, can capture high dynamic range (HDR) color images required by occupant monitoring systems (OMS), as well as high-quality near-infrared (NIR) images typically captured by standard DMS sensors. The driving monitoring system DMS can analyze the driver's head and eye movements with NIR imaging technology in all light conditions.

The new sensor is available in bare wafer (VDB1940) and BGA (VB1940) package configurations, samples are available now, and production is scheduled based on demand for the 2024 model year currently being designed. Contact your local STMicroelectronics sales office for a quote.
