Renesas Electronics announced the launch of the 4x4 channel, 76-81GHz radar transceiver RAA270205, entering the automotive radar market. Designed to meet the demanding requirements of ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance System) and L3 and higher level autonomous driving applications. Renesas has added the transceiver to its growing portfolio of sensor fusion products, including radar, vision systems and other sensing units, drawing on years of automotive expertise working with customers around the world.

The RAA270205 new transceiver MMIC (monolithic millimeter-wave integrated circuit) is suitable for imaging radars, long range forward looking radars and 4D radars, as well as angular radar and central processing radar architectures, the so-called "satellite" vehicle-mounted radar systems. The RAA270205 is equipped with 4Tx and 4Rx channels and supports up to 16 MIMO (multiple input and multiple output) channels. It can be cascaded to obtain higher channel numbers and better radar resolution.

The RAA270205 has superb accuracy and bandwidth up to 5GHz. Its ADC (analog-to-digital converter) sampling rate of 112.5MSPS is nearly three times faster than other products of the same type. At the same time, the power consumption of 1.2W is 50% lower than that of similar transceivers. In addition, the noise factor of the product is 9dB, which is 3dB lower than other radar transceivers. Frequency modulation up to 300MHz/µs improves radar resolution and object detection capabilities.

"Today's radar transceiver MMIC must achieve higher resolution to support the high accuracy requirements of ADAS and autonomous safety platforms," said Vivek Bhan, senior vice president and vice president of Renesas Electronics' Automotive Solutions business unit. Working closely with Steradian, which has deep radar design expertise, Renesas is expanding its sensor fusion offerings with a focus on features such as functional safety and low power consumption to help reduce development costs and time to market for our customers."
