Power Integrations has launched the next generation of CAPZero series of innovative two-terminal X capacitor discharge ICs. CAPZero-2 IC covers a wide range of applications and output power, thereby increasing design flexibility. The CAPZero-2 IC's X capacitance range extends from 0.1µF to 6µF, and its rated breakdown voltage is 1 kV, which provides a transient voltage capability of 6kV and can withstand severe line surges and swells. CAPZero-2 IC is an intelligent high-voltage switch that can significantly reduce no-load and standby input power consumption. The CAPZero-2 device is connected in series with the resistor to provide a safe discharge path for the power supply X capacitor. When an AC voltage is applied, the CAPZero-2 device prevents current from flowing to the discharge resistor, thereby reducing the wasted power in these components to zero. After the AC voltage is disconnected, the CAPZero-2 switch will automatically close, and the energy will be diverted from the exposed AC plug by closing the circuit, so that the X capacitor will automatically discharge safely. Edward Ong, Director of Product Marketing at Power Integrations, said: "With the introduction of our new CAPZero-2 IC, power supply designers only need to limit part numbers for all of their X-capacitor discharge IC applications. This increases design flexibility and shortens Time to market, while reducing the resources required to qualify equipment. "The CAPZero-2 X capacitor discharge IC eliminates a critical source of power loss, while at the same time making the power supply comply with IEC 62368-1 (a new overall safety standard covering a wide range of Energy-consuming equipment). The new standard will replace IEC 60950 and IEC 60065, and will soon become a mandatory standard. Since CAPZero-2 devices have passed the safety certification of CB and Nemko, developers do not need to perform separate capacitive discharge safety tests on the power circuit. The company claims that applications include air conditioners, household appliances, small appliances, cookware, vacuum cleaners, televisions, desktop and laptop computers, projectors, workstations, computer monitors and printers.
