According to a report by the Nihon Keizai Shimbun on June 15, Japan will cooperate with the United States to establish a 2nm semiconductor manufacturing base in Japan as early as 2025. It is reported that Japan and the United States will provide support under a bilateral chip technology partnership. Private companies in both countries will conduct research on design and mass production.
The report pointed out that Japanese and American companies may establish joint ventures, or Japanese companies to establish new manufacturing centers. The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry will subsidize some of the R&D expenses and capital expenditures. Joint research could start as early as this summer, with research and production centers set up between 2025-2027.
In early May of this year, Japan and the United States signed the basic guidelines for semiconductor cooperation. The two sides said they would discuss the details of the cooperation at a follow-up meeting.
