Intersil has introduced the latest power-saving solutions for 2-in-1 notebooks, ultrabooks and tablets-ISL95852, highly integrated power management IC (PMIC) and ISL95521 battery charger. Both devices comply with Intel's IMVP8 specification to support their new Skylake 6th generation Intel Core processors. ISL95852 and ISL95521 utilize Intersil's patented R3 modulation technology, which provides best-in-class light load efficiency, excellent regulation accuracy, and fast dynamic response, thereby improving system power management and extending battery life. ISL95852 is the industry's most integrated Vcore PMIC for the IMVP8 platform. Compared to discrete solutions, its 4mm x 4mm size and high switching frequency allow the use of small external inductors and capacitors to reduce board space by 50%. ISL95852 integrates control, MOSFET driver, power MOSFET, and fault monitoring and protection functions for three synchronous buck switching regulators. These high-efficiency regulators convert system voltage from a battery or AC adapter into the three voltage rails required by the core processor, graphics processor, and system agent. The ISL95852's programmable switching frequency is twice as fast as competing solutions and can be adjusted to 1.3MHz during load transients. ISL95521 is the industry's first hybrid boost (HPB) and narrow VDC (NVDC) combined battery charger. Its charging current accuracy is 1.2%, which is 4 times higher than similar competitors, and it extends battery runtime, while enabling faster system testing and calibration, which improves production yield. The ISL95521 combo battery charger can be pin-configured into HPB or NVDC mode, eliminating the need to redesign the circuit. Both configurations support 2- to 4-cell lithium-ion batteries as well as system turbo mode, which helps the battery and AC adapter work together to load the system beyond the adapter's capabilities. The HPB charger is configured in reverse to boost battery power to the system bus in turbo mode, while the NVDC charger quickly turns on the battery BGATE to help the adapter provide system power. Andrew Cowell, senior vice president of Intersil mobile power products, said: "Our customers' latest mobile computing devices will be supported by Intersil's innovative solutions that enable thinner form factors and battery life throughout the day." "ISL95852 The PMIC and ISL95521 combined battery charger is part of a series of power management solutions behind the most efficient mobile devices on the market. " Intersil's overall IMVP8 compatible power management solution (also including the ISL95908 peripheral PMIC) powers the CPU / GPU, battery pack and subsystem peripherals: flash memory, USB, HDMI, audio, sensors, camera modules and WiFi. Key features of ISL95852 PMIC: 1-Highly integrated power management IC for Intel IMVP8 CPU 2-3 high-frequency integrated FET switching regulators generate core processors, graphics processors and system agent voltage rails 3-Extensive faults Protection for over-current, over-current voltage, under-voltage and over-temperature warning signals 4-I2C bus allows system fault monitoring, enabling control, configurable GPIO and output voltage offset programming 5-PROCHOT # and PSYS monitoring are available via AC adapter Or ISL95521 battery charger provides system power information to ISL95852 PMIC for digitization and sending to CPU The main functions of the ISL95521 charger: 1-can be configured as an HPB charger or NVDC charger through pins, so that the AC adapter provides system power in Turbo mode 2-protection features include PROCHOT # and PSYS indicators for low system voltage Adapter overcurrent, battery overcurrent, system overheating, adapter / battery current limit 3-SMBus programmable limit setting with adapter / battery current monitor and 1.2% accuracy can extend battery run time 4-NFET active control surge Current to prevent FET damage 5-Prevent system crash and memory loss: When the battery pack is removed during turbocharging and learning mode, the adapter immediately takes over the system load. 6-16 switching frequency options (from 350kHz to 1MHz) allow smaller, lower cost inductors
