Today, server, communications, and network storage applications are doing their best to reduce power consumption and reduce solution size. At the same time, a rapidly changing market requires system solution providers to meet market demands faster than ever. With this in mind, Infineon Technologies AG has launched a highly efficient and reliable DC-DC step-down converter module to further expand its product lineup of POL (Power On Load) modules. These modules are ideal for system designers who want to help them accelerate their new products to market with compact, fully integrated and easy-to-design POL products. They are primarily aimed at applications with limited space and cooling conditions, such as telecom and datacom applications, servers, and network storage applications.

The TDM3883 and 3885 IPOLs are fully integrated single output buck converters capable of delivering up to 3A/4A continuous load with high efficiency, excellent line and load regulation, and support for a wide input voltage range of 4.5 V – 14 V. The integrated inductive and capacitive elements reduce the number of external components and facilitate the easy implementation of higher power density designs. Compared to discrete solutions, this integrated solution reduces parasitics and improves performance by minimizing PCB traces. At the same time, due to the extremely small package size, these modules can save up to 80% of the PCB footprint, unlocking more possibilities for customer solutions. For these two optimized power modules, Infineon has rigorously tested the integrated inductive and capacitive components in both reliability testing and finished product testing (FT), which further eases the customer's workload and eliminates the need for Select and test passive components.

Both modules feature low supply current (10 μA) when turned off, extending battery life in portable devices. In addition, due to their extremely small reference voltage (VREF) tolerance (0.5 V±1.0%) and low ripple, they deliver precise output power, which helps improve system stability and reliability. To this end, they also feature an enhanced stability COT (Constant On-Time) engine with ceramic capacitors and no external compensation, and a Forced Continuous Conduction Mode (FCCM) option. In addition, these modules feature thermally compensated internal overcurrent protection (OCP) that can improve light-load efficiency by reducing switching frequency and utilizing diode emulation mode (DEM). Under ultra-light load conditions, they can enter a low quiescent current mode, making them ideal for reducing standby power consumption. Not only that, but they also feature internal soft-start, enable input, pre-bias start-up, thermal shutdown, power good output, overvoltage protection (OVP) and undervoltage lockout (UVLO) among other features.
