The LM1086 is a voltage regulator with a maximum voltage drop of 1.5 V at a load current of 1.5 a. The device has the same pins as ti's industry standard lm317. Two resistors are required to set the output voltage of the lm1086 adjustable output voltage version.
Typical Application
Fixed output voltage version integrated adjustment resistor. Typically, input capacitors are not required unless the device is more than 6 inches away from the input filter capacitors. Output capacitance is replaceable for ceramic and appropriate esr. The lm1086 circuit includes Zener trim band gap reference, current limiting and heat closing.
Since the LM1086 voltage regulator is floating, it only detects the input-output differential pressure. As long as it does not exceed the maximum input-output differential pressure, the power supply of several hundred volts can be adjusted. Exceeding the maximum input-output difference will result in a short circuit in the output. The lm1086 can also be used as a precision current regulator by connecting a fixed resistor between the regulating pin and the output.
