Key Features Include Larger 6.0 mm² Photosensitive Area, Higher Reverse Photocurrent, and Compact 4.8 mm x 2.5 mm x 0.5 mm Package
Malvern, Pennsylvania, USA, and Shanghai, China — August 20, 2024 — Vishay Intertechnology, Inc. today announced the release of its new silicon PIN photodiode, the VEMD8082, which offers enhanced sensitivity for biomedical applications such as heart rate and blood oxygen monitoring at visible/near-infrared wavelengths. Compared to previous generations, the VEMD8082 features higher reverse photocurrent, lower diode capacitance, and faster rise and fall times. Additionally, its compact size of just 4.8 mm x 2.5 mm x 0.5 mm makes it ideal for integration into slim devices such as smartwatches.
The VEMD8082's high sensitivity is especially useful in biomedical applications like photoplethysmography (PPG), where the photodiode detects changes in blood volume and flow by measuring the amount of light absorbed or reflected by blood vessels. Accurate measurements in these applications are crucial for diagnosing and monitoring cardiovascular diseases.
Compared to its predecessor, the new device offers a larger 6.0 mm² photosensitive area and an 18%-20% increase in reverse photocurrent, depending on the wavelength, resulting in higher sensitivity. The diode capacitance has been reduced from 50 pF to 46 pF, and the rise time has been significantly improved from 110 ns to 40 ns, enabling higher sampling rates.
Samples of the VEMD8082 are now available, and the device is in full production.
