Small redundant analog TMR angle sensor for safety-related applications

Technology Cover
Data di Pubblicazione: 2022-09-20, TDK Corporation

TDK Corporation has expanded its TMR angle sensor portfolio with the release of the TAS4240 TMR-based angle sensor for automotive and industrial applications. Typical application areas include commutation of brushless DC motors and permanent magnet synchronous motors in safety-related environments, such as electronic power steering, brake boosters, etc.; and the use of a range of sensors in industrial servo motors, automation, encoders, robotics of linear position sensing.

The device is available in a compact TSSOP8 package and provides two redundant analog single-ended SIN/COS outputs. This sensor provides accurate angle measurement in applications requiring high performance and limited space. As a 360-degree angle sensor, it is ideal for accurately measuring the rotor position of brushless linear motors used in safety-critical applications, such as power steering, brake boosters, or traction motors.

The sensor includes four TMR half bridges and provides two independent SIN/COS outputs. Higher safety levels, up to ASIL D, can be achieved for the system while providing higher availability of position information, even in the event of a failure of one output signal. Depending on the system architecture, the sensors may also support the concept of failure operation.

Its state-of-the-art TMR technology benefits from its long-standing expertise in magnetic sensor technology. It optimizes its sensors by successfully incorporating sophisticated TMR technology into a small package. The angular accuracy of the sensor remains stable over different temperatures and the lifetime of the sensor. The device's deterministic behavior over extended magnetic field ranges unlocks new application possibilities, even under harsh conditions.
